Essentials of Ultrasound for General Surgery

We are pleased to have participated in the first Essential Ultrasound course for General Surgical Medical Officers and Registrars, held at Woodland Health Campus on May 30, 2025.

We were delighted to present on basic ultrasound physics and its clinical applications, and to support the workshop with our latest FUJIFILM Sonosite ultrasound systems.

All participants were divided into small groups across  hands-on stations, ensuring a favorable instructor-to-participant ratio. This structure allowed everyone to receive focused guidance and meaningful hands-on practice.

The workshop focused on core ultrasound skills essential to surgical and emergency care, including:

  • Ultrasound-guided cannulation techniques

  • Fundamentals of FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma)

  • EFAST (Extended FAST)

  • AAA (Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm) scanning in trauma

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants were expected to:

  1. Understand the basic principles of ultrasound physics and image acquisition

  2. Develop proficiency in using ultrasound for bedside assessment and procedural guidance

  3. Recognize normal and pathological ultrasound findings relevant to surgical practice

  4. Gain hands-on experience in performing focused ultrasound examinations

We are proud to have contributed to this important educational initiative and thank the organizers for the opportunity to support the future of point-of-care ultrasound training.
